Letran Research Center Holds the First International Conference on Interdisciplinary Research


The Research Center of Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Manila, in cooperation with the Research Office of Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Bataan and the Pampanga Research Educators Organization (PREO), organizes the first international research conference held in Letran Manila, the International Conference on Interdisciplinary Research (ICIR 2019) on April 11-13, 2019 at the St. Thomas Hall.

Academics, researchers, and guests from various provinces and cities in the Philippines graced the event in order to encourage interdisciplinary collaborative research in the entirety of the research landscape. The main aim of ICIR 2019 is to introduce participants into the idea of joint research ventures in order to boost the capabilities of each other, which will then help improve the country in international research rankings and evaluations.

ICIR 2019 began with the Bird’s Eye-view presented by the Director of the Letran Research Center-Manila, Asst. Prof. Louie Ian Mariano. This was followed by the Opening Remarks of the president of PREO, Dr. Jean Paolo Lacap. The Welcoming Remarks was delivered by the Rector and President of Colegio de San Juan de Letran Manila and Bataan, Rev. Fr. Clarence Victor Marquez, O.P., SThD.

Director Nelson Cainghog of the Office of Planning, Research, and Knowledge Management of the Commission of Higher Education (CHED) gave his Plenary Lecture on Research as a Bridge from the National to the International Area. It was highlighted that research is a weak factor in the development of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and it must be strengthened through national and, later on, international collaborations and research endeavors. Director Cainghog also gave focus on the importance of attending and participating in conferences to further widen the scope of research networks still for the general development of the Philippine research arena.

ICIR 2019 boasted of plenary speakers from the international and national levels. This included Dr. Alexis Esposto and Dr. Aron Perenyi, both from the Swineburne University of Technology, Australia, who discussed The Basics of International Journal Publications and The Value of Citations: Bibliometrics in International Research, respectively. Also in the roster of plenary speakers is Assoc. Prof. Johnny Amora of the De La Salle University-College of St. Benilde, who discussed Global Trends in Statistics and Quantitative Research

Parallel breakaway sessions were conducted in the afternoon of Day 1 and the entire day of Day 2. Research papers from the fields of Health and Allied Sciences; Humanities and Education; Management, Business, and Economics; Social and Behavioral Science and; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics were presented by the conference’s participants. Panels of Experts had evaluated the papers and Best Presenter awards were given to the participants who garnered the highest scores.

To formally conclude the conference, the Directress of the Letran Bataan Research Office, Asst. Prof. Edessa Flordeliz, gave the Conference Summary.

A tour of Intramuros was highlighted in the third day of ICIR 2019.
